Refrigerated Shipping Containers

Refrigerated shipping containers, known in the trade as reefers, carry and store goods at a controlled temperature. An integrated refrigeration unit at one end pushes cold air through a T-bar floor and around the cargo, while insulated walls hold the temperature steady. We sell 20ft and 40ft high cube reefers in one trip and used condition, all in working order.

How a reefer works

The machinery draws in warm air, cools it and blows it under the cargo through the grooved floor, then pulls it back over the top of the load. Good airflow depends on not blocking the floor or stacking above the red load line. The refrigerated container article gives more background on how reefers developed and how they are used at sea.

What to check before buying refrigerated shipping containers

  • Run the unit and confirm it reaches and holds your target temperature.
  • Inspect door gaskets for tears, as poor seals waste energy.
  • Look at the inner walls and floor for damage to the insulation or drains.
  • Confirm the power supply you have matches the unit.

Our article on buying a reefer container covers each of these checks step by step.

Sizes

A 20 foot reefer suits shops and smaller sites. The 40 foot high cube offers far more volume for wholesalers and events. Insulation makes the inside narrower than a dry box, so compare internal sizes on each listing. For on-site storage ideas, see our refrigerator containers page.

Ordering and delivery

Reefers are heavier than dry boxes and need a firm, level base with room for airflow at the machinery end. Read our delivery guide first. You can also learn more on our refrigerated containers page, browse used shipping containers, or contact us for a quote on refrigerated shipping containers.
