Used Shipping Containers

Used shipping containers have spent years carrying cargo at sea and are now retired from shipping service. They show dents, scratches and surface rust, but the ones we sell are wind and watertight with working doors, which is all most storage jobs need. They are the most affordable way to get secure steel storage on your property.

What “wind and watertight” means

A wind and watertight box has no holes in the roof, walls or floor, and the door seals close properly so rain and wind stay out. Stand inside with the doors shut on a sunny day: if you see no daylight, the shell is sound. Cosmetic dents and rust patches do not affect this.

How to inspect used shipping containers

  • Check the roof for soft spots or pooling water.
  • Open and close both doors and look at the rubber seals.
  • Walk the floor to feel for weak or delaminated boards.
  • Look at the corner castings and bottom rails for heavy corrosion.

Every ocean container carries an owner code and serial number under the BIC code system, which helps you trace its identity.

Used or one trip?

If the box is going on a farm or behind a warehouse, used is usually the smart buy. For offices, homes or retail use, a near-new unit from our new shipping containers range looks better and lasts longer. Our guide to one trip vs used shipping containers compares the two in detail, and our used shipping containers page explains our grading.
